First Post - What is Warden?
First post!
I figured this being my first post needed a heading of its own! My name is Adrian (founder of Warden).
I hope you all will enjoy my blog and subscribe to receive updates, if you have an suggestions for future posts or some features you would like to see on the blog (maybe a comments section?) you can use the “Contact” in the Resources section of the page footer. Now that that’s all out of the way, lets get into it!
A little about me
Much of my professional experience has been cloud infrastructure automation. It wasn’t until I started learning Rust that I got into the embedded programming space. When I did my first “blinky” project I felt inspired. I think there is something incredible when the computer and hardware space meet and produce a tangible result that you can see, feel or hear. I really wanted to get into the smart home space as a consumer. However, I believe in the right to my data and privacy. I quickly realized that it is very difficult to find devices rich with features that aren’t using some external API, shoveling my data to some data-center on the other side of the world. So I decided to build my own embedded smart home devices and rather than keep all my plans and ideas to myself I want to share them with you all!
Outside of technology, I enjoying running and watching movies, Science Fiction I think is my favorte genre.
What is Warden?
Warden was born out of the idea that consumers need better options around smart home products. The landscape is built with many feature rich devices that offer a pinnacle level of convenience. Let’s be honest that sounds hard to compete with as a startup building from the ground up.
However, there is more to smart devices that features. So, what makes Warden different? Privacy. For too long companies have treated their consumers as the product. Every time you use your smart value, change your thermostat temperature, you are sending data to the cloud. I believe your smart home data should stay home! A system that runs without internet is not only more secure, resilient but its comforting.
Where are we at in development?
Right now, I am in firmware development land. I have a series of dev-kits sitting on my desk and a soldering and 3D printing station behind me.
I have my first iteration of my hub which needs some additional testing. The hub is its own custom Linux distro build with Buildroot so we can make sure it’s built with only the dependencies needed.
Once I feel confidant that my firmware is in a good place I will be ordering some circuit board and soldering components for additional testing. All in all I am hoping for this process to be done by end of May but hopefully even sooner!
Stay tuned because next time I will be talking about my products, some of things I am excited about and some of the challenges ahead. Till next time!
